Captain's Log: 20130519S

Saw Star Trek over the weekend. Great movie. Not great as in "this is an epochal movie that will be remembered for generations. When people look back in the history of cinema, they're going to say "Wow. I was there when that movie came out. This is important. This *means* something." It's just a movie that hits every note, runs on all cylinders, and keeps you firmly in seat, wondering what's going to come next. There is character-building, action set-pieces, chases, space battles, hand-to-hand-combat, sexy innuendo, strange aliens, exotic locations, cliffhangers, and everything you could and should expect from a summer blockbuster.

WAW: The Website a Week Project Ends

You can read about it here: http://thewebsiteaweekproject.com/

Basically, I've gathered so much work for the coming months that I simply cannot also create a new website every week and remain both sane and alive. So, choosing between the three, I opted to shut the project down and bask in the glow of paying gigs.

One year ago, this week, I pushed this picture to the internet, and Hard Hobbit to Break was born.

I really didn't know what I was doing for about a month or so. I knew I wanted to have the story of Spamwise Hamgee, Kablooey the Pink, and Bill the Pony, but I dicked around with the 4-panel Lessons from the Red Book and some Dilbert-esque work-related comics, and a side-comic I want to do someday: Thrust and Parry, about anthomorphic swords.

Finally, the origin story came, and our team came to LA... in a most inauspicious manner.

Warren Ellis Called Me a Twatwaffle! (Or: How to Build Brand Loyalty with Twitter)

@gawainthestout Apparently I owe you an apology, but you're still a twatwaffle and I will bury you in a shallow grave with @3liza

— Warren Ellis (@warrenellis) June 15, 2012

TL;DR: Twitter is awesome. Yes, yes, I know. Everyone in the world already knows this already. Shut up and let me pontificate.

It took me several years to start using Twitter. For as much as I love technology and the like, I'm very much a mid-to-late adopter on things I can't find a practical purpose to, and as a writer who struggles with "wordiness," a 140-character-limit text broadcaster had little no practicality whatsoever for me. In the last 9 months or so, though, I've seen just what a powerful tool Twitter can be. And it all started when critically acclaimed cartoonist Warren Ellis called me a Twatwaffle. I don't know what a Twatwaffle is, but I know what twats are, and what waffles are, and the combination is fantastic.

The Next Great Clary Filmmaker

After his brush with acting this summer (as seen on Portlandia last month) we started looking around for things that might interest Stephen in drama and other creative outlets of the like. Then I found Claymation Studio 3.0 Deluxe. A nifty little software package with a webcam and the ability to create stop-motion animations. It's got some slick visual design tools: onion skins and rotoscoping, as well as blue-screen technology for compositing images.
